$20 Golden Double Eagle Commission

$20 Gold piece, "Double Eagle"  replica

A commission and permanent installation for Fidelity State Bank and Trust, 600 S Kansas Ave, Topeka, Kansas 66603

There were many elements to this monumental project that made it special from start to finish. The date is significant to the banks establishment, the border and numbers were 3D printed to be true and to scale to the original coin and lady liberty is over 5ft tall! Just to name a few. This was an amazing endeavor and I couldn't have done it without help from colleagues new and old, cheers.

Challenge

Right from the start the sheer scale of this piece was a challenge. Creating the pattern alone I had to laminate my drafting table to accommodate the size of Lady Liberty. The next challenge was getting it cast into bronze. Rocky at J W Reffel Metals Foundry in Denver, Colorado was there to save the day. His crew did a fantastic job with this behemoth, weighing in at 1,000lbs and using 10,000lbs of sand to create it! With help from Jim Rinner at Bartlett & West we were able to brainstorm a solution to install it. Thanks to KC Sign Express we were able to use their sign crane to lower it in. And of course, I had 5 friends help me get it in the ground and my parents even pitched in! This was an awesome process from start to finish and I couldn't have done it without the support from friends and family.

Value

A custom made monumental scale bas relief (low relief) like this took me about 4 months to create and sculpt. The casting was another 3.5 months and the installation another month, so about 9 months start to finish. Bronze sculpture is a challenging and creative process but also extremely satisfying to see come to fruition. Whatever you can dream, we can make a reality. Lets talk!
